Situated
on the California Central Coast, the project design centers on the
dramatic natural features of the Pacific Ocean beachfront environment.
The architectural design evolved from the client's desire for a second
home that is a tranquil place for living, art, and retreat.
Design emphasis is placed on the creation of minimal sculptural building
forms in juxtaposition with the site context. Muted gray color architectonic
forms stand in deference to the ocean front beach to the south and
the wetlands and distant mountain range to the north. Elevated off
the site in order to meet ocean flood control requirements, the house
cantilevers over a Corten steel wall and reflecting pool further emphasizing
the detached, sculptural quality as if it is raised on a pedestal.
Extensive use of glazing and roof openings transforms the dynamic
coastal sunlight into direct and diffuse natural day lighting. The
ever-changing natural light accentuates the sculptural building forms
and creates a layered building transparency. Large, multi-slide, glazed
patio doors and horizontal ribbon windows with mitered glass corners
open the house to the site. Opaque glazing is used for circular stair
treads, entry doors, and the large sectional garage door as translucent
design elements that transmit diffused light through the spaces.
Building materials have been selected for their natural aesthetic
beauty and suitability for the harsh coastal environment. Articulate
meticulous detailing underscores the natural characteristics of the
materials and the integrity of the minimal design aesthetic. Integrally
colored stucco, Corten steel, exposed concrete, stainless steel, opaque
and clear green glass, maple, and natural stone comprise an understated
palette of materials with a quiet beauty and tranquility. |
